Symbolism of Roses

The Rose is a symbol of love and passion that dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans that associated roses with Aphrodite and Venus, the Goddess of love. In Roman times, newlyweds were often crowned with Roses and women of high society would make a poultice of Rose petals in the belief that it would banish wrinkles. The Queen of beauty, Cleopatra, would bathe in petal infused milk and would soak the sails of her ship with Rose water so the breeze would surround her with the scent. Persians began commercially cultivating Roses and discovered steam distillation of Rose petals to extract the pure goodness of this Queen of flowers.

The Damask Rose which is the rose that is used to produce the essential oil is still traditionally handpicked and steam distilled fresh.
