Vitamin C and What it does for the skin.

Theresa Szalay

Vitamin C is a powerhouse ingredient that has the ability to brighten the complexion, even out skin tone, firm the skin and helps to diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

What is Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid that is a potent antioxidant that is necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues including skin. Vitamin C helps prevent UV damage, reduce pigmentation, reduce inflammation and boost collagen in the skin. Our bodies don't produce Vitamin C nor store it. The only way to get it in you is by ingesting it or applying it topically for our bodies to absorb and utilize. Some popular sources of Vitamin C are: citrus fruits, leafy greens, tomatoes, strawberries, rosehips and seabuckthorn oil just to name a few.

Benefits of Vitamin C for the skin

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that neutralizes and removes free radicals minimizing the visible impact of environmental stress. This powerful ingredient also plays an important role in supporting the skin's moisture barrier by strengthening the lipid barrier which will help retain moisture and keep the good stuff in and the bad out ie; free radicals. We are all concerned about fine lines, wrinkles, density and bounce of our skin. Free radical damage can harm the structural proteins: collagen and elastin. When these proteins become weakend, the structural support of the skin becomes compromised resulting in sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin C also helps stabilize the collagen we already have, helping our skin stay firm, plump and youthful looking. When faced with stress of any kind , the skin defends itself by triggering cells called melanocytes to produce the pigment melanin. Vitamin C inhibits the production of melanin and minimizes the appearance of dark spots and hyper-pigmentation. With Vitamin C's acidic nature it is helpful in sloughing off dead skin cells which helps speed up cell turnover leaving skin smooth and dewy.

How to get Vitamin C into the skin

When choosing a Vitamin C serum look for L-ascorbic acid which is the most potent and effective form for skin care. Look for complimentary ingredients as well like Vitamin E which will help the Vitamin C's stability. Vitamin C topically can be used on all skin types but it is recommended to do a patch test first for sensitive skin. A great way to add Vitamin C into your skincare routine is with a serum. Applying 1-2 drops on cleansed skin morning and night followed by a facial oil and or moisturizer is ideal way to use this fast absorbing ingredient.

How to store your Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a vulnerable ingredient that can break down rapidly and oxidize degrading it's benefits. We always recommend storing your Vitamin C skin care in a cool, dark place with a well sealed lid. Can also be kept in the fridge to keep it fresh longer.
